A Nora Vale Novel
A jailhouse informant, an airtight confession, and five words Nora can’t forget.
Coming soonAt 2:14 in the morning, a jailhouse informant calls the wrong number.
He's the State's star witness in a murder case. He has a lawyer, and Nora Vale knows she shouldn't be on the line. Before the guard cuts him off he says five words she can't forget: "Somebody gave me the words."
Nora is a retired homicide detective who now investigates for the defense. Her new client is a young roofer charged with killing the bail bondswoman across from the county jail. The State's case looks airtight: a motive, a palm print, a neighbor who saw him at the door, and a confession, told to a cellmate, that includes a detail only the killer could know.
The informant won't talk again. The prosecutor wants Nora thrown off the case. The detective who built it was trained by the partner she can't stop missing. And the closer Nora looks at that "secret" detail, the more people seem to know it.
Somebody taught the second witness exactly what to say. Nora means to find out who before the trial starts, and before whoever it was decides the words should never be heard again.
A tense, twisting legal thriller about informants, alibis and the stories we want to believe, from the author of THE OTHER SUSPECT.
