About the book

It's spring in Mesa: orange blossoms, scorpion season, and the Superstition Sunrise Balloon Classic. Process server Sol Brannigan has spent three weeks failing to serve Duke Carrabine, the Waffle King of the East Valley, and Duke has dared her on live TV to try again. Sunrise. At altitude.

So Sol grabs the basket of his giant fried-egg balloon and gets hauled five hundred feet into the sky. She makes the serve. An hour later, the Golden Yolk is down in a date grove and the Waffle King is dead.

The police say he flew too low. Sol saw the drag marks in the mulch. Suspects line up like a breakfast buffet: a Miss Malted widow, a weepy radio host, a Scottsdale vulture with a forty-million-dollar deal, a pancake queen with a thirty-year grudge, and Sol's own boss, who won't say where she went for forty minutes.

With a nun who logs every sin in a notebook, a dog who hates khaki, a brother's wedding in two weeks, and two men waiting for an answer, Sol has to find out who really made the waffles before somebody takes her for a ride she won't come down from.

Hot desert. High stakes. Served sunny side up.
